Advertising methods have evolved in rapidity unrivaled by many industries. One prominent facet of this growth is the outdoor sign.

Outdoors signs form a large part of what is known as out of home advertising which encompasses all kinds of non TV, radio or in house adverts. It is common along our highways, in our shopping malls on our high streets even surprisingly painted on residential houses and farm barns. In fact outdoor signs are so many and varied it is virtually impossible to exhaust the list in its entirety.

Outdoor signs are meant to catch the attention of passers leaving an impression on their minds which they will not forget. Outdoor signs are used not only for commercial advertising but also for conveying messages although the former is more prominent

The outdoor advertising industries diversity has led to a stratification leading to various classifications. The dichotomy cuts through print versus digital outdoor signs. Digital signs are becoming more and more popular due to their versatility. Digital ads are able to display action and captivate audiences in more ways that print which mainly relies on a creative catchy phrase.

Digital signs are primarily categorized into high impact, which covers large ads in prime locations such as airports, rail stations and large buildings. Another category would be the Retail outdoor signs which primarily revolve around high street stores, supermarkets and fairs, parks etc.

The third kind refers to ads where the audience is held immobile for a period allowing the ads to run unhindered. This is usually found in sports stadiums, casinos, restaurants, pubs et cetera. These cannot be purely classed ‘outdoor’ but are more relevant in the ‘out of home’ bracket of reference.

Print ads are the traditional mode of outdoor advertising alongside human directional signs. They include billboards, posters, and the large bulletins seen on major highways. There are many kinds of outdoor print signs. They include traditional, wallscapes, and mechanical billboards.

Traditional billboards are everywhere literally. These billboards are not constrained to location and can advertise products not necessarily in the same location as the advert. They are typically along major highways and motorways. The display is created by various print methods. One way is the printing on polyvinyl sheet which is printed on A0 strips which are stretched on a metal frame.

Wallscapes are also interesting as they use previously existing buildings or structures to market their products. In some counties, farmers have ads painted on their barns for the free paint coat. They are commonly seen on large walls, parking bays. They are usually either painted or spray painted or with traditional print methods.

Outdoor advertising is here to stay but legislation and regulation can at times adversely affect the industry. Printing of adult material or what society terms immoral billboards next to schools or parks may lead to punitive action by governments as well as local authorities.
